HiNative - Language Learning App Reviews

This is a great idea, a great execution, and a great community. I do think that the iPhone app itself could use some better development, though. Some things I wish… 1. I wish the “Quick!” animation were either unobtrusively fast (ironic that it’s sometimes slow) or not there at all. As is, I post an answer and then keep browsing for a few seconds, only to be surprised by this clock blocking me from learning xD 2. I wish the answer-count badges on questions would automatically update, at the very least when I return to the list of questions after answering one. Otherwise I click on a question expecting to be the first one to answer it and find that it’s already been answered 3 times while I was answering the last question. I do like, however, that the question list does not refresh automatically, so you don’t end up seeing a question you want to look at and then losing it when the list refreshes. 3. I also wish the questions themselves had a refresh button or pull-down refresh function or were more obviously checking periodically for updates. Clearly I’m trying to avoid looking the fool by posting a redundant answer :P 4. I wish that replies to answers showed up as such, instead of being treated in the notifications list and answer count as answers to the original question. 5. I wish there were a way to dismiss questions in the list. That way when you don’t know the answer to one, or aren’t interested, you can stop looking at it. 6. I wish there were a way to filter by “few” answers (maybe 2-3?) instead of only 0. Often the first 5 or so answers can all be useful, or the first answer(s) can be improved upon, so it’s still useful to look at questions with a few answers, but maybe not those with ~10 answers already. 7. I wish the “Questions about [my language of interest]” tab had the filter, “In my native language” instead of “About my language of interest.” The “About my language of interest” filter in the “Questions about [my language of interest]” tab just results in people who are native in my language of interest mistakenly writing that their question is ABOUT their native language. Really, I want to see the questions ABOUT my language of interest FROM people with my native language. >_> Did that make sense? As a side note, I learned about HiNative from Grace, YouTube’s TexanInTokyo. It is very much something I was looking for, and a great way to practice and learn without having to speak one-on-one with someone! Premium is expensive, but I will consider buying it if I find myself spending a lot more time on HiNative in the future.

I really enjoy this app :) I recommend that anyone who has trouble finding language help, uses this ^^ It is very helpful, but responses can take a while, depending on the time differences between you and the person you are contacting.

This is the most amazing app and is perfect if you need help learning or understanding something in another language or if you love helping someone understand your native language.

I use this a lot when I have questions when learning Korean.

Nice app. But if you switch over to another app, like safari, to grab a picture or definition and then try to come back to HiNative the HiNative app usually refreshes and you will lose your place along with anything that you typed and havent sent. Very aggravating!

This is really good app to learn a language and socialize, it would be great to have individual chat and forums but other than that Id recommend

This is a great way to improve the Language of your interest. Yo can interact with others native speakers to realize of your mistakes.

This app is really helpful. Plus, all the people on here are really nice and reply fast.

The interface lags which can be annoying. The Korean page is full of Spanish speaking Kpop fans that dont seem to be serious about language learning. I wish the mandatory question you have to post when you first sign up could be optional because it also crowds the message board with a bunch of useless posts. Aside from the Korean tab, the other language options are of great help.

Its a wonderful app I enjoy it so much its very helpful thanks to this app I have advanced in my Korean and Japanese compared to the other apps this is way better I cant wait to see what kind of updates this app will have in the future

The app is a little bit hard to use. And why no iPad version?

I joined to ask some question about my beginning Japanese, but ended up spending most of my time helping out other people. Its addicting! The interface, however, is difficult to get used to, and its easy to lose your place. Like someone else mentioned, the app asks you to ask a question when you first join. This results in a lot of spam posts by members that dont really need help just yet. You also never really know the quality of answers that you will receive. Ive had to correct several people who left completely incoherent answers, and I know Ive accidentally made mistakes when helping others as well. It makes you worry if your questions will be answered correctly! Otherwise, fun and helpful app.

Very helpful app. I use to use Lang 8 a while ago. Its nice to be able to get answers and help answer other peoples questions in exchange(: However, I remember this use to be a lot more popular, if Im not mistaken...?

If youre learning any language and need to ask a question and want a quick response, this app is for you. If you like helping other people learn your native language, this app is for you!

I seriously love this app! Not only are you able to help others with correcting sentences and learning vocabulary, but you are also able to learn! 10/10 recommend this app!

Its a VERY active app that doesnt require prolonged interaction if it isnt wanted and vice versa. Love it!
